After years of raving about CBD for pets, we have designed our own CBD oil specially made for your furry friends!  These drops are suitable for dogs, cats, mice/rats, horses, rabbits, and more!
Why give your pets CBD?
Many animals share the same endocannabinoid system that allows cannabinoids to affect our nervous system. CBD provides animals with similar benefits that we gain from supplementing this helpful cannabinoid.
Dogs were domesticated from wolves when ice sheets covered much of the northern portions of Europe and Asia. Cats, being the independent little darlings they are, pretty much domesticated themselves. However, it’s hard to tell sometimes who has trained who better, as pet owners often scour store aisles and surf online for the best food, treats and toys on the face of the earth for our beloved animals. We want our animals to stay healthy and happy, which brings us to the question: Should we give CBD products to our pets or not?
First Things First: What is CBD?
To understand what CBD is for animals, it’s best to understand what it is overall. The abbreviation is short for Cannabidiol, a chemical substance naturally found in marijuana or hemp. The substance is used in products such as edibles, balms and oils, and it promotes feelings of calmness and relaxation in humans and animals. Moreover, the way CBD isolates are manufactured separates and excludes the psychoactive THC found in weed. In a nutshell, it won’t make you or your four-legged buddy high when you take it!
Cannabidiol Treatment in Humans
Recent studies suggest that Cannabidiol-containing products may help treat humans who have disorders such as anxiety, insomnia, inflammatory and neuropathic pain (two of the most difficult types of chronic pain to treat)and the pain and inflammation due to arthritis. As it turns out, many animals from dogs to cats, to guinea pigs have many of the same ailments that humans do. Likewise, their ailments can be treated in much the same way that they are treated in humans. Meanwhile, these benefits have led to the rise of CBD products being used on our pets.
The Benefits of Cannabidiol in Animals
Studies in 2014 and 2019 suggest that CBD can help animals feel better since it influences serotonin levels in their brain. Serotonin is a chemical produced by nerve cells that send signals between them that affects every fibre of their being, including their fine motor skills and emotions.
Serotonin is also considered to be implicit in mood stabilization – and besides being involved with sleeping, eating, and digesting, serotonin is also believed to reduce depression and alleviate anxiety, heal wounds, lessen inflammation and maintain the health of bones.
Because of these properties, you can say CBD products are a good, effective botanical treatment for anything from Fido’s separation anxiety when you leave during the day, to alleviating the pain and inflammation arthritis brings to elderly cats.
Are CBD Products Safe for Animals?
After seeing the wide array of products, such as pet friendly CBD oil, hemp oil drops for animals, etc. advertised, you may wonder whether CBD for pets is safe to give to your furry companion. Fortunately, studies show that Cannabidiol products are safe to use for a majority of our animal friends, although you should refrain from giving it to those that are pregnant or lactating.* Also, it’s extremely important to buy high-quality, animal-friendly CBD products that have safe ingredients. Some CBD oil for humans has terpenes and artificial sweeteners like Xylitol, bo
th of which can harm your pet’s health.
*Please note that while a great deal of this content is backed by anecdotal evidence and the opinions of veterinary professionals, it is very important to consult with your pet’s veterinarian before treating them with CBD or any other medicine.
CBD Oil for Dogs
Strong evidence suggests that dogs can experience as many benefits from Cannabidiol as their human counterparts. That’s why many dog owners have turned to CBD for treating them for a wide variety of disorders. While the research is limited, the experts at Prudent Pet Insurance believe that CBD oil may help your dog with anxiety, chronic pain, epilepsy and overall well-being.

CBD Oil for Cats
Similar to canines, felines may reap many benefits from the use of CBD oil. Jeffrey Powers, the chairman of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Biologic and Therapeutic Agents, believes that CBD is an effective analgesic and strong anti-inflammatory agent that can be useful in treating cats.
Professionals at the Boulder Holistic Veterinary Clinic hold similar opinions, suggesting that CBD can be used to treat cats with several conditions, including IBD, pancreatitis, asthma, chronic upper respiratory infections and seizures.
However, not all CBD products are suited to cats. Our kitties are extremely sensitive to the terpenes in hemp extracts, which can even be toxic to them. Green Cuisine’s CBD oil for cats, which we make ourselves, is made from the highest quality hemp and is terpene-free, making it safe for your little purr box.
Ailment Specific CBD Doses for Cats
The professionals at Boulder Holistic Veterinary Clinic recommend the following doses for each specific ailment:Â
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD): Dosing: Start with 0.2 mg/kg twice daily and increase gradually.
- Pancreatitis: Start with 0.1 mg/kg twice daily and increase to 0.5 mg/kg twice daily. It is very important to minimize fat consumption in cats with pancreatitis.
- Arthritis: Start with 0.5 mg/kg of CBD twice daily and increase gradually.
- Cancer: Start with 0.5 mg/kg of CBD twice daily and increase gradually.
- Asthma: Start with 0.5 mg/kg of CBD twice daily and increase gradually.
- Chronic Upper Respiratory Infections: Start with 0.5 mg/kg of CBD twice daily and increase gradually.
- Seizures: Start with 0.5 mg/kg twice daily and increase as needed, with up to 3 mg/kg twice daily if required.
CBD for Small Animals
Every creature in the animal kingdom, save for insects, has an endocannabinoid system. As such, CBD oil is tolerated well by many small animals, which are also known as exotics by specialty veterinarians. That spells good news for pet reptiles such as your child’s bearded lizard.
However, refrain from giving small animals such as rabbits Cannabidiol, even though some websites say it’s ok. Bunnies have very complex GI systems and are prone to stasis. They need a special diet and can be very sensitive to different substances. Toys made from raw hemp are perfectly fine to give to pet rabbits, though.
Is CBD Right for my Animals?
Although there are plenty of preliminary studies and anecdotal evidence backing up the positive benefits of CBD for animals, it’s best to talk to an expert prior to administering CBD or any other treatment to your animals. If you have any concerns or questions, again, please consult with your trusted veterinarian.
