7 Rare Facts about CBD Oil

Facts CBD oil? There’s a lot of information about cannabidiol (CBD) on the internet, and some of it can be confusing and contradictory. This is partly due to the fact that there’s a bit of a ‘war’ going on between the drug companies, doctors and the public with regards to laws governing the use of cannabis for medical and/or recreational purposes.

That’s why we strive to be experts through education. After recently studying some research we found some very important facts about CBD oil that aren’t discussed much, and thought to share them with you in this article. So let’s start…

What you probably already know about CBD Oil

For all our new readers, we think its fair to first give a brief summary of a few common facts about CBD oil before we move on to more specialized information.
All mammals have an endocannabinoid system that works to transport neurotransmitters, or chemical messengers, throughout the brain and central nervous system. CBD works naturally with the receptor sites to transport these “feel good” chemicals throughout the body that can help with pain, anxiety and inflammation.

CBD Oil Has Many Benefits

The use of CBD benefits has been found to decrease anxiety, relieve pain, in addition to having been tested in several experimental models of autoimmune disorders with anti-inflammatory results.

These disorders include multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and hepatitis. CBD was shown to have protective properties against these conditions with favourable results.

CBD won’t make you high

The active component that makes you high in marijuana (a cannabis variant) is called tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. While both CBD and THC are the primary components of marijuana, CBD is non-psychoactive while THC acts as its psychoactive counterpart.

7 Rare Facts About CBD Oil

Now that we have the basics covered, let’s get into some little-known facts about CBD oil.

1. CBD can balance THC

Smokeable marijuana – the kind that gets you high – has been increasing in potency in the last few decades. What’s often called “hippie weed” is grown naturally outdoors and has tons of sticks and seeds that need breaking up and removal in order to get it into a state that’s easy to roll.

Today’s marijuana is cultivated much differently and looks a lot different: fluffy, green with threads of different colours, and loaded with crystals. It even smells different.

These newer marijuana strains are cultivated to have higher THC, which is often associated with anxiety, paranoia, and increased levels of stress. CBD is the balancer to the equation, and that’s why so many people have found it to be useful to treat anxiety and depression.

2. The first recorded medicinal use of hemp occurred around 2700 B.C.

The use of hemp seeds and oils for medicinal purposes goes back thousands of years in many cultures. Historians have traced back its use in China to 100 A.D., 2500 B.C. in the Netherlands, along with documented use thousands of years ago in Ancient India and Ancient Greece.

3. CBD was prescribed by Queen Victoria’s Doctor

Sir J. Russell Reynolds, Queen Victoria’s doctor prescribed cannabis to help relieve cramps associated with menstruation. Writing in 1890, he claimed that cannabis tinctures “when pure and administered carefully, [are] one of the most valuable medicines we possess.”

4. CBD may help with opioid addiction

A study published in 2019 explored the potential of CBD to reduce craving and anxiety in recovering heroin addicts.

The method involved a double-blind randomized placebo-controlled trial that assessed the short-term effects of CBD administration and assessed the cognitive and physiological effects on the participants.

The results showed significantly reduced cravings and anxiety without any serious adverse effects, providing a strong basis for further investigation of its use as a treatment option for opioid addiction.

5. New marijuana strains high in CBD can treat serious seizures

Charlotte’s Web – a strain of cannabis high in CBD and (very) low in THC has been developed by the Stanley brothers in Colorado for treatment of seizures.

It was named after a 5-year old girl named Charlotte Figi who used it to help control Dravet Syndrome – an illness that causes frequent and uncontrollable seizures.

Not only is this an important development for the disease, but it’s also helping to bring about change regarding medical marijuana laws in the United States.

Ash – one of Green Cuisine’s founders – initially developed a tincture to treat epilepsy for a close friend. You can read the story here.

6. CBD can be used to treat pets

The use of CBD is becoming popular to treat arthritic issues, bone fractures, aggression, diabetes, and even cancer in dogs, cats and other animals.

Just like in humans, pets are mammals with a fully functioning cannabinoid system that makes treatment with CBD oil possible for a variety of conditions.

7. CBD is proving to be an effective alternative to commonly-prescribed mental health drugs

The use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) that include drugs like Prozac, Celexa, Lexapro, Paxil) and Zoloft is very controversial. Many well-known and respected medical professionals like Dr. Kelly Brogan (one of our favourites) are sounding the alarm about the damaging effects these chemicals have on the system that releases chemicals like serotonin.

While that debate continues, researchers are now exploring natural options like CBD to help people suffering from mental health issues like depression and schizophrenia.
